The Second Law of thermodynamics was created when scientists noticed that you were not able to pass heat from a cold to hot. Rudolf Clausius and William Thomson were the first scientists that put this observation onto paper.

Thermodynamic processes are irreversible because they all result in an increase in entropy. What is entropy? Entropy is the quantitative measure of disorder in a system. Also, direction of time will always flow in the direction of increasing entropy.
